MENTORING MOMENT: We Care, NYC. One thing we can't get used to about NYC is the ever-present sight of the homeless. A problem that has worsened since the onset of COVID. Determined not to become accustomed, my daughters and I began a simple project "We Care, NYC." For the last three years, we have hit the streets armed with care bags. The contents vary with the season. Right now they hold hats, socks, masks, hand sanitizer, and snacks. I admit I have had moments of doubt, realizing that those in need far outnumber the bags we could possibly distribute, even in a lifetime. But last week, we were inspired to continue. I was riding the subway when a man announced to the entire car that he was hungry. As he walked toward me, I handed him a package. He looked at its contents and declared: "Wonderful! What I don't use, I will share." Before I could reply, a man sitting with his young son asked if I had another. When I pulled out my last package, some extra scarves, and gloves, their faces lit up. "Thank you," he said with his voice and his eyes. Overwhelmed, I got off at the wrong stop and wept. I realized then that by helping even a single person, we are helping our city, and our world.
